Today at Hope's Bookshelf, I'm lucky enough to have Saundra Mitchell guest blogging as apart of her 30 Days of Summer blog tour. Saundra is the author of Shadowed Summer, which was released in paperback just recently. To the left is the cover of Shadowed Summer. To look more into or to purchase Shadowed Summer, you can visit Indiebound, Book Depository, Powell's, or Amazon. Now, enough of me, here's what Saundra has to say!
One of the best parts about being part of the literary community is
getting sneak peeks at upcoming books. Hope has been kind enough to let
me guest blog today, and I'd like to share four books that I can't wait
to read.
I've been a longtime fan of historical fiction, and I especially enjoy
gender-swap stories, ghost stories, and chilling gothic tales. These
books have those elements, and that's why they're on my "must read" list!
THE EDUCATION OF BET by Lauren Baratz-Logsted - July 2010 from Houghton
Mifflin
It's Victorian England, and Bet wants to go to school; her dear friend
Will wants to join the army. Bet conspires to impersonate Will- he'll go
off to see the world, and she'll take his place at school.
Disguised as a boy, Bet soon discovers that the education she was
expecting is not exactly the education she gets.
THE HOUSE OF DEAD MAIDS by Clare B. Dunkle - September 2010 from Henry Holt
In this prelude to WUTHERING HEIGHTS, young Tabby Ackroyd takes a
position as a nursemaid at Seldom House, watching over a savage
foundling boy.
But Seldom House is haunted by its dead maids and masters, and the ghost
of the last maid won't leave Tabby alone. Why is this house full of
ghosts- and is this foundling boy truly doomed?
WILDTHORN by Jane Eagland - September 2010 from Houghton Mifflin
Louisa Cosgrove is a Victorian doctor's daughter with dreams of becoming
a doctor herself, who ends up locked in an insane asylum, renamed and
called a lunatic.
She must unravel the mystery of her incarceration, and find a way to
free herself- and if she falls in love with one of the asylum guards
along the way...
THE REVENANT by Sonia Gensler - Spring 2011 from Knopf
In 1896, Willemina Hammond plans to start over. She steals the identity
of a schoolteacher and heads out west to the Cherokee Female Seminary,
where she thinks she'll have a much easier life. But tensions are high
at the seminary, which seems more like a castle on the prairie than a
school. And like many castles, it seems to be haunted.
A student's murder casts a long shadow, and Will finds herself in
danger- of exposing her real identity, and quite possibly losing her own
life- as she dares to investigate further.

I have a galley copy of Wildthorn, and I'm SUPER excited to check it out. I knew that women were often locked up in insane asylums, often without good reason, by their husbands, but I've never read a book about this subject. :)
All those books sound great. :) I just love getting ideas for new books to read!
