Wintergirls - Laurie Halse Anderson

Summary:

“Dead girl walking,” the boys say in the halls.
“Tell us your secret,” the girls whisper, one toilet to another.
I am that girl.
I am the space between my thighs, daylight shining through.
I am the bones they want, wired on a porcelain frame.

Lia and Cassie are best friends, wintergirls frozen in matchstick bodies, competitors in a deadly contest to see who can be the skinniest. But what comes after size zero and size double-zero? When Cassie succumbs to the demons within, Lia feels she is being haunted by her friend’s restless spirit.

In her most emotionally wrenching, lyrically written book since the multiple-award-winning Speak, Laurie Halse Anderson explores Lia’s descent into the powerful vortex of anorexia, and her painful path toward recovery.

Review:

All I can say about this book is WOW. It is really amazing. I have read two of Anderson's other books, Prom and Twisted, and thought they were just okay -- they were pretty good, but they just didn't pop out to me, you know? Wintergirls, however, definitely popped out to me. The way Anderson wrote this... just wow. It's very haunting, yet amazing. You won't want to read more because it's so haunting, yet you will find yourself turning the pages because you just. need. to. get. more. This book is so amazing that Anderson makes two blank pages look like a genius thought of the idea.

The characters were written beautifully. While Lia was a strange character, and her mind worked a lot different than I'm sure most of ours do, yet the way she's written, the way the whole book is written, it seems sometimes easy to understand how her somewhat twisted mind thinks and why she makes the decisions she does.

I guess what I'm trying to say - and failing miserably at - is that this book was AMAZING. It's definitely worth going out and buying a hardcover for. I haven't read Speak yet, but have it here borrowed from a friend, and I will definitely be putting it to the top of my TBR list after reading Wintergirls.

hope.

Whoohoo! I'm so glad you liked it too. I loved it, and Speak too. Those are the only books I've read so far by her.

If you want, check out my review...it's just been posted with a couple videos that make me think of the book. :)

I lovedddd the two blank pages as well.
