Isabelle's Boyfriend - Caroline Hickey

Summary (thanks to amazon):

WHAT DO YOU DO IF THE GUY OF YOUR DREAMS IS SOMEBODY ELSE’S BOYFRIEND?

Taryn has found the perfect guy. Epp is tall, athletic, handsome, and best of all, she is sure he likes her, too. There’s only one problem: He’s dating someone else. But when Taryn becomes friends with Epp’s beautiful girlfriend, Isabelle, her life begins to change. New friends, movie dates, and a first kiss—life couldn’t get any better, could it? Except that Epp is still Isabelle’s boyfriend. Girls will relate to Taryn’s sincerity and humor as she tries to balance family, friendship, and, of course, romance.

Review:

There's one general word that comes to mind when I think of Isabelle's Boyfriend: okay. The idea was pretty good, but the way it was written... wasn't. Don't get me wrong, the writing was fine - I love Caroline Hickey's voice and the way she writes, but a few things combined made this book just and 'okay' for me.

First, the characters were supposed to be 15 (my age), but they acted so much younger. Like freshmen, even eighth graders at some points in the book. Like, "OH MY GOSH HE LOOKED AT ME IN A WEIRD WAY HE MUST LOVE ME!" type deals in this book.

Second, sometimes Taryn's voice got annoying. There were some parts where it was written so wonderfully and I could feel what Taryn was feeling, and follow her thought process, but in other parts of the book, I just... didn't see any logic in what she was doing. I got very annoyed in some parts, because Taryn would repeat every little thing that happened before - that was already explained - and just explain it again.

Other than that, this book wasn't really bad. The idea seemed original enough to me and, even if it was on the short side, I did enjoy it. Like I said above, Taryn's voice was written wonderfully in some parts of the book.

Three hearts, or a C.

hope.

Ohh that must have been annoying that the main character acted immature for her age.

And the idea does seem unoriginal.
