Booking Through Thursday: Conditioning

Are you a spine breaker? Or a dog-earer? Do you expect to keep your books in pristine condition even after you have read them? Does watching other readers bend the cover all the way round make you flinch or squeal in pain?

I try to keep my books in good condition. I will admit that I am a dog-earer. I have lots of bookmarks, but I don't use them most of the time. I don't really know why, but I usually just end up dog-earing.

There are only a few books that I have broken a spine on, though. If a book that I own has a broken spine, it means that it was really good and I loved it. I only bend the spine on books when I've been reading for a while but I don't want to stop - no matter what.

What kinds of things do you do to your books?

hope.

I try to keep my books in perfect condition, but that usually isn't how they stay. I hate dog-earing the pages, so I use a bookmark or atleast try and remember the page number.

The only book I own that has a broken spine is Twilight and that's because I've read it about five times and so have both of my sisters. It's so bad that I have a small section of pages that come out of the book completely. But I think that means that they were well loved.

Of all things, this is what my family makes fun of my the most for, by far. I am positively OCD about my books staying in pristine condition. Most of my books, even the ones I have read over and over again (like 10-30 times), still look like they belong in a Barnes and Noble. I take the jacket off, no food allowed in the same room, and I season each book meticulously before reading them.

"Seasoning" is where, before you open a page, you "wear" the book in gently. You start at the middle of the book and spread it out just far enough until you hear the glue start cracking, then you cut it into quarters, with the same process, then you start at the beginning of the book and slowly open it until it cracks then move a short section ahead, repeat. Then you go back and do it however many times you need until you can lay the book open all the way. This preserves the book better than any other way I know. And no cracked spine or fallen-out pages. That might help your next well-loved book "just blinded book reviews" :)

Wow. I really do sound OCD. But I'm not, I just love my books.

When it comes to my books I am a perfectionist. I've never broke one of my books' spines, nor have I ever dog eared one of them. The worst damage I've done is bending the edges on my books from pulling them in and out of my bag.
It kills me to watch people dog ear their books or break the spine. (Which is why my friends like to do that, just to harass me.)

I try not to break the spines, but I confess I'm a dog-earer when I don't have a bookmark.
